The Department of Justice Association of Black Attorneys (“DOJABA” pronounced “Doe-jah-ba”) is a group of attorneys organized since 1989 with the purpose of enhancing the professional environment of African-American attorneys at the Department of Justice and providing outreach and community support to those interested in the pursuit of law.  DOJABA members include attorneys in the Offices, Boards and Divisions of the Department as well as various United States Attorneys’ Offices throughout the country.  There are approximately 200 DOJABA members throughout the country.  

DOJABA’s objectives are:

  • To assist the Department in promoting and effecting full and equitable participation and utilization of its Black attorneys.

  • To bring to the attention of the Attorney General or other appropriate officials any Department practices and/or policies that may be inconsistent with the objectives of the Organization.

  • To monitor the polices, objectives and directives of the Department to ensure that appropriate consideration is given to the interests of Blacks and other minorities who may be affected by the actions of the Department.

  • To promote good working relations between the Department and the Organization's members. 

  • To assist the Department in its efforts to recruit, hire, and retain and otherwise enhance the employment status of Black employees.

  • To maintain meaningful communications between the Department, Black employees of the Department and the greater Black community.

  • To speak for members of the Organization concerning issues related to the Organization's purposes and objectives.

  • To foster interpersonal relationships between Black employees of the Department.

  • To work to eliminate any discrimination whenever and wherever it exists. 

  • To support and interact with other organizations in order to promote common objectives and solve mutual problems.

  • To promote a better understanding of Black culture and heritage.

  • To undertake all actions necessary and proper to attain the objectives of the Organization.
