DOJABA Member Spotlight: Kashia Adams (May 2021)

To honor the Excellence of DOJABA Members, we will circulate a “DOJABA Member Spotlight” every other month.  This month we celebrate  Kashia Adams.

Kashia Adams is a Paralegal Specialist in the Disability Rights Section. Kashia was selected amongst hundreds of applicants for a highly competitive Pathways position in the Civil Rights Division.  In the Disability Rights Section, she assists with investigations into violations of the Americans with Disabilities Act. She conducts legal research, manages complex litigation files, drafts documents, and supports attorneys in all aspects of witness preparation and case analysis. She’s instrumental in conducting the many interviews needed for the Division to properly investigate and assess claims of disability discrimination.

Kashia brings with her a diversity of experiences. DOJ managed to steal her away from the Social Security Administration (SSA), where she was a Claims Specialist investigating foreign claims and providing policy analysis. Before working for the SSA, she was a Judiciary Clerk for the Talbot County Maryland District Court. She also interned at the Maryland Office of the Public Defender. Prior to this, she was a Substitute Teacher in the Caroline County Maryland Public Schools. In this role, she instructed and supported young people with disabilities. In her current position, she not only supports attorneys but is also a member of a Substantive Impact Committee whose goal is to ensure that persons with disabilities are treated fairly under the law. Clearly, helping others drives her as this issue is near and dear to her heart. She hopes to attend law school and use her talents to help underrepresented and marginalized youth.

Kashia excelled in academics.  She received a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice from Stevenson University. She performed exceptionally well in her coursework, earning Dean’s List honors. She was a member of Alpha Phi Sigma Criminal Justice Honor Society. She was awarded the honor of presenting at a conference on trends and issues in criminal justice. Her passion for learning continued after she arrived at DOJ. Although she is busy assisting with disability discrimination investigations, she earned a Westlaw Paralegal Certification, and actually enjoys research challenges!

Upon joining DOJ, Kashia hit the ground running. For example, she participated in an event for law school students on behalf of DOJABA. She also attended various other DOJABA events.

Please join us in saluting Kashia for her contributions to DOJ and to our community. We celebrate your excellence, Kashia!
