Nine Judicial Law Clerks Wanted Newly Elected Court of Appeals of Virginia (ASAP and Fall 2022)

LAW CLERK ANNOUNCEMENT:   Newly elected Court of Appeals of Virginia Judges, Judge-Elect Dominque A. Callins, Judge-Elect Doris Henderson Causey, Judge-Elect Vernida R. Chaney, and Judge Junius P. Fulton III, seek candidates for one or two-year judicial clerkships, beginning immediately in the Fall season of 2021 and the Fall season of 2022.  Judges Callins, Causey, Chaney, and Fulton (collectively “Judges”) welcome all applications and urge qualified applicants to apply as soon as possible.  (Flyer attached)

WORK LOCATIONS:   The Judges’ Chambers will be the primary in-person work location identified below, and remote work is expected, as needed.  Occasionally, travel to other locations in Virginia is required when the Court returns to in-person proceedings.

Judge-Elect Doris Henderson Causey – Richmond, Virginia

Judge-Elect Vernida R. Chaney – Alexandria, Virginia

Judge Junius Fulton, III – Norfolk, Virginia

LAW CLERK DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:  Conduct legal research; prepare memorandums analyzing and summarizing appellate briefs and trial records including transcripts, pleadings, and exhibits; draft court opinions and court orders; citation and quote check appellate briefs and judicial opinions; operate timer and recorder for oral arguments.  Administrative duties include filing final orders and opinions, making travel arrangements, maintaining office records and files, typing, answering the phone, and interfacing with the public and the Court of Appeals administrative staff. 

LAW CLERK QUALIFICATIONS:  Juris Doctor degree from an ABA-accredited law school.  Membership in good standing of the bar of the Supreme Court of Virginia or the highest court of another state or having sat for (or intending to sit for) the most recent bar examination in any state.  Prior legal, clerkship, or internship experience in criminal, civil, domestic relations, workers' compensation, administrative agency law, and familiarity with the trial and appellate court procedures, systems, and rules utilized in the Commonwealth of Virginia is a plus but not required.  Successful candidates must demonstrate an exceptional work ethic, be organized, detail-oriented, and digest voluminous materials while meeting critical deadlines.  Applicants should be able to demonstrate excellent analytical and writing skills as well as competence with online legal research (Lexis/Nexis/Westlaw), and computerized word processing software (MS Office).  American citizenship or permanent legal residency and criminal background check are required.

COMPENSATION/BENEFITS:  Judicial Law Clerk salary- $74,082.  Administrative Law Clerk salary- $57,220.  Competitive benefits package includes paid holidays, sick and personal leave, health insurance, retirement, life insurance, deferred compensation, and short- and long-term disability.

LAW CLERK APPLICATION PACKETS:  The deadline for applying is Friday, September 10, 2021, for the September 18, 2021, Virtual Panel Interview.  All clerkships will remain open until filled.  You may continue to apply for the clerkships after the deadline date.

Application Packets containing the materials enumerated below must be sent electronically, via email, to the Judges to whom you are seeking consideration.  The Judges will only interview candidates who agree to be considered for a clerkship with at least two of the four participating judges.  Still, you may request consideration by all four judges.  Note:  Judge Fulton is seeking law clerks for the 2022-2023 term only.

1.    Personalized cover letter for each of the judges to whom you are applying.  In each letter, state (a) whether you are willing to be considered for a clerkship with at least two of the three participating judges and identify the other judge(s) by name, and (b) if you have not already been admitted to the bar, the most recent bar for which you have sat or intend to sit.

2.    Resume (updated) resume including, among other things, student organizations and professional associations;

3.    Writing sample drafted solely by the applicant (including certification of sole authorship);  

4.    Official law school transcript; and  

5.    List of two references and their contact information.

APPLICATION SCREENING AND VIRTUAL INTERVIEW PROCESS: The Judges, individually and collectively, will review the applications and decide which candidates to invite to a Virtual Panel Interview. The Judges will host the Virtual Panel Interview on Saturday, September 18, 2021. If you are selected for the Virtual Panel Interview, you will be notified by email of the time and log-in information. Note: The Saturday Virtual Panel Interview will be only for candidates who have stated their agreement to work for at least two of the four judges.
