DOJABA Black History Spotlight

The Social/Cultural Committee brings you these "Did You Know" facts:

Did you know that Lincoln University of Pennsylvania, founded in 1854, became the first degree-granting institution of higher education for African Americans, paving the way for the founding of hundreds more Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs)?

Did you know that Cathay Williams became the first and only female Buffalo soldier in 1866? She would pose as a male for two years until a doctor discovered that she was a woman, which led to her immediate discharge from the military.

Did you know that mathematician and scientist Benjamin Banneker is credited for designing the layout of Washington, D.C.?

 Did you know that W.E.B. DuBois organized the first Pan-African Congress, which took place in Paris, France over the course of three days in February 1919? Read more about this event here.
