2021 Department of Justice African American (Black) History Month Observance

Each year in February, the Federal Government and communities across our Nation take time to celebrate African American (Black) History Month.  During this time, the Federal Government also acknowledges the immeasurable contributions of African Americans to the United States and all aspects of our society, including those who work hard each day to support the Justice mission.

The national theme for African American (Black) History Month is “The Black Family:  Representation, Identity, and Diversity.”  The Department will observe African American (Black) History Month via a recorded video program that will include special remarks from Monty Wilkinson, Acting Attorney General, and three DOJ employees who will share their personal reflections on this special observance.

Employees are encouraged to view these remarks, which will be posted on DOJNET and the JMD EEO Staff intranet site, along with a transcript of the recording, during the last week in February.  Employees are also encouraged to read the 2021 Presidential Proclamation on National Black History Month.  Additional sources of information on African American (Black) History Month, and the history, culture, and contributions of African Americans are available.  Among on-line resources are web pages by the History, National, African American History MonthLibrary of Congress, and the Center for Racial Justice in Education.

The Department and its DOJ Component Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) Offices look forward to conducting dynamic special emphasis programs during 2021.  These programs will provide employees the opportunity to learn more about the Department’s diverse workforce, and ongoing work to foster an inclusive work environment and to ensure EEO for all.  All DOJ employees are encouraged to participate in these important programs as they are scheduled.

* DOJABA Chair, Oneshia Herring, will be providing remarks as part of the Department’s Black History Month Program.
